Heard about Hatchimals? The must-have toy for Christmas 2016!

They’re the toy of the moment and they’re nowhere to be seen! Fluffy, cute and colourful – Hatchimals have danced and sang their way into the hearts and minds of kids everywhere and onto their Christmas wish lists. So much so that there’s now a shortage around the world and the makers are in a race against time to come up with enough supplies to save from the tears on Christmas day.

So What exactly are Hatchimals? The best way to describe them is as “2016’s answer to Tamagotchis”. They start out as a brightly speckled egg which through a child’s attention and care soon start to hatch into a playful cuddly chick, as either a Pengula or Draggle in one of five colours. Kids then have to “raise” them through three stages – as a baby, a toddler and a kid while the Hatchimal learns to walk, sing, dance, play games and even mimic the child’s voice!

The bad news for parents is that they are currently out of stock in Ireland and most of the rest of the world. The manufacturer has cautioned parents against panic buying the much sought after toy on auction sites like eBay, where some can be bought for a whopping €250 or more. The recommended retail price is around €79.99. A statement on the toy makers website says:

“This is a special time of year and we don’t want anyone to be disappointed, nor do we support inflated prices from non-authorised resellers. We are working on creative solutions to help kids and their parents withstand the wait. In the interim, some retailers are developing pre-sale and/or rain-check programs for redemption in January. We will continue to update with program details as they become available.”

They have also described the response to Hatchimals as ‘extraordinary’ and ‘unprecedented’ but have promised that more are on their way and should be on shelves, though in high demand by the end of November.

What else are kids loving this Christmas? Well another interactive toy is proving a big hit, this time a dog named Snuggles My Dream Puppy. Lego is also feeling the love with a Star Wars Rebel U-Wing Fighter, Volcano City and Lego Friends Party Shop all getting the thumbs up. And imagination hits the road with Hot Wheels Ultimate Garage making the cut in this year’s list of dream toys.
